Cedarcrest Red Wolves vs. Archbishop Murphy Wildcats – Cedacrest tonight hosts an old friend as it looks to get back on the winning track as the stretch drive approaches in this regular season. Archbishop Murphy is that old friend, and the Red Wolves will also be looking to avenge a road non-league loss to them earlier this season.
The Wildcats have found the going a little more challenging than perhaps they expected within Wesco this season. ATM is winless in league play and 5-8 on the season. However, that early-season home win over Cedarcrest does factor into this one; how will the Red Wolves respond, especially as they’re playing for more than themselves tonight. More on that in a second.
Junior Mateo Trimble leads Murphy; he is averaging around 11 points a contest and led the Wildcats with 17 in their 61-50 win over the Red Wolves back on December 5 in a non-counting Wesco contest. Also watch senior Cole Calnon and junior Jaxon Miller for coach Len Bone’s crew; they are both averaging just under 10 a night. Calnon added 14 for ATM in their win over Cedarcrest earlier this season.
As for the Red Wolves, they are coming in off a loss Wednesday at home to Meadowdale which shared the same characteristics of their loss last Wednesday at Stanwood – slow start in first quarter that the team was not able to recover from in time. So again, as we discussed last Friday in this segment, the key for coach Joe Ayers and his team is to play a full 32 minutes, and if they do, they’ve shown themselves to be competitive with most anyone in this conference this season. Senior Chris Busch leads the Red Wolves; he scored 13 to lead Cedarcrest in their 63-53 loss to the Mavericks Wednesday. Junior Cameron Brady also had 13 in that game and will also be a player to watch for the home side, who is taking the time to keep the game in perspective tonight and are recognizing a more important battle facing one of their own.
As was the case last Friday night at Mount Si High School, the Valley community tonight is once again going to go to bat for a fellow Cedarcrest student who is currently battling cancer, and tonight, the Red Wolves boys and girls are helping to support Mason Peters’ fight and giving you in the Valley another opportunity to help send a strong message that cancer is picking on the wrong kid.
During the boys’ game tonight, a number of volunteers (all kids) will make their way through the stands with buckets looking to raise money for this fight from those of you who attend the game, so if you are able, please donate and help this cause. As you know, last Friday, Mount Si High School’s basketball programs helped spread awareness and also raised a little money as well to help support fellow MSHS student Ryan Gerlitz’s fight with cancer, and as you remember, the community came out in force to help support the cause, so it is hoped the lower Valley will do the same tonight for Mason.
Mason, we have a special message for you now. Just like we said to Ryan last Friday here, we are guessing this fight has been challenging thus far, and will probably get tougher before it gets better. But know this: Your school and your community have your and your family’s back as you continue on this journey, and tonight, if you and your family are able to make it to CHS to watch the game, you all will hopefully see that up close.
You may be aware about Mount Si’s efforts to help their fellow student battling this same awful disease, and we hope – and trust – that Cedarcrest will give you the same support and love as your battle continues. When this is all said and done, when you have beaten this, cancer will again find out the hard way, just like it’s going to with Ryan, it picked on the wrong kid. Because your fight, Mason, is our fight as a community. We have a bonus pick for you, too, this morning. We like Cedarcrest to gain revenge for their loss to Murphy with a home win fed by the emotional strength of playing to win for you, Mason, and we also expect you to win your battle hands down. #MasonStrong
